Using EBSCOhost Web
EBSCO
provides access to over 2,600+ publications, of which nearly 1,000
are peer reviewed periodicals.
Overall dates of coverage
range from 1971 to the present.
ProQuest Research Library is comprised of a core collection of
publications, 19 subject specific modules, and National Newspapers 5.
To get to EBSCOhost Web
1. From the Virtual Library home page,
select "Research and Information Resources."
2. Click on "Online Subscription Databases -- registered
user."
3. Scroll down the screen to "Academic Search Elite"
and click on
"registered user."
4. At the prompt, enter the
username s6222955 and the
password password, and then
click on "login."
5. Select EBSCOhost Web.
6. Check the box next to the databases you wish to search
(defaults to Academic Search Elite) and then click on "continue."
7. EBSCOhost defaults (automatically
goes back to) a basic keyword search.
To use the EBSCOhost "Advanced Search"
- From the
EBSCOhost home page, click on the "Advanced Search" tab at the top of
the page.
- You may select AND,
OR, and NOT to combine keywords associated with searchable fields.
- Field search option
defaults to "Default Fields;" the diamond arrow allows the
searcher to choose from 10 fields.
In addition, the advanced
search allows the user to limit the search by specifying publication
title words, publication type, peer reviewed, or published date range;
it allows the user to expand the search with three options: "Also
search within the full text of the articles," "Include all search terms
by default," and "also search for related words" (not shown).

- in the first
box type control and select
the "subject" search option
- leave the
AND in place, type ammunition
in the next box, and leave the search option at "Default Fields"
- select
"publication type" periodicals and
"document type" article
- click on
"search"
- click on the
title of an article that interests you
- examine the
bibliographic information, paying particular attention to the subjects
list
- click on one
of the subject headings
- use clues in
the bibliographic record from the first article to expand or refine
your search
- the goal of
research is to find the right amount of useful, accurate
information: 2 hits may be too few, while 421 is certainly too
many.
- to expand
the number of hits, reduce the number of keywords and choose the "Also
search within the full text of the articles" option at the bottom of
the search page
- to reduce
the number of hits, limit search to only newspapers or periodicals, to
a particular type of article (feature, editorial, etc.), or a
specific date or range of dates.
